With rumors running rampant across the Interwebs and just about a month to go, here’s what we know about the coming iPhone 8; Apple’s new flagship, slated for release this September.
Every two years, Apple churns out a new iteration of the iPhone. This year, we’re expecting to see the customary s versions of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. Meaning, we’ll get faster processors but no redesign of the current generation. However, this year is different. Apple is celebrating 10-years of the iPhone. For the occasion, Apple will also be releasing an anniversary edition that’ll be the iPhone 8.

Design. The phone will be enclosed in a steel-frame and sandwiched between two sheets of glass, reminiscent of the iPhone 4 and 4s but touting the more rounded design first introduced with the iPhone 6.
Screen. The iPhone 8 will feature a 5.8″ full-front bezel-less display, using OLED technology. However, there will be no curved-glass display that was previously rumored. Expect a slim phone as OLED doesn’t need any backlighting, thus the display can be made thinner.
No home-button. The iPhone 8 will in place of Touch-ID instead feature facial recognition according to many sources. Since there will be no physical button, the iPhone will display on-screen buttons à la Touch Bar found on the New MacBook Pros.
AR/VR Capabilities. The iPhone 8’s dual camera module will be fitted with 3D-sensing technologies. Also, it will have moved to the side and rotated vertically to better accommodate AR/VR capabilities. The new and faster A11 chip is of course capable of powering these features. Even the front-facing camera may be fitted with a 3D-module, using infrared light to assist with the facial recognition.
Facial recognition. In lieu of Touch-ID, the iPhone will be able to scan its owner’s face, even from an angle. Based on depth perception, the new built-in 3D-module won’t be fooled by photographs, greatly improving the security over Touch-ID.
Wireless charging. The use of glass for both sides of the phone lets the iPhone 8 charge wirelessly, much like an Apple Watch.
Water resistance. The new phone is likely to be IP68 compliant, meaning you can take dips with your iPhone 8; something not recommended with the iPhone 7 or the 7 Plus, currently only IP67 certified.
The new iPhone 8 and its siblings, the iPhone 7s and 7s Plus are going to be announced in September. Those in line for an iPhone 8 will have to wait, as supply-chain sources claim Apple won’t be able to scale up production fast enough to meet initial demand. The new iPhone 7s and 7s Plus will instead of a glass-body feature an aluminum design. Considering the iPhone 7 Plus costs USD $769, it’s a big leap to the rumored $1,100 price tag of the new iPhone 8. It’s only last year Apple finally got rid of the smothering 16GB phone models. This year, Apple has reportedly ditched the 32GB storage as well. It seems Apple will only be offering 64GB and 256GB models of the new phones; needless to say, the baseline prices will have gone up too…
